Here's the pie recipe some of you have asked about. Sometimes called Emily's Strawberry Pie, or Blanche's Strawberry Pie.

STRAWBERRY PIE

9 - 10 inch unbaked pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

1/4 - 1/3 cup slivered almonds

*Sprinkle almonds on piecrust and bake according to crust directions, then cool.

1 can Eagle Brand Condensed Milk (sweetened)

1/3 cup lemon juice, fresh is best

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring (this is crucial!)

*Mix until thickened (be patient here while the lemon juice works as the thickener)

1 cup whipping cream, whipped

*Add 1/2 of the whipped cream to condensed milk mixture and pour into cooled pie shell.

*Put fresh sliced strawberries on top and chill.

*Add a small amount of confectioners sugar to remaining whipped cream and serve with the pie.

Lovely! Not strawberry season in Seattle yet — my plants still have big white flowers on them.

But since I’ve been writing about my now deceased stepdad lately, your prompt brought to mind his love for peaches and ice cream, which I wrote about in my journal a little this morning. Thank you!

Have I shared this poem with you before? https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43012/from-blossoms Your reflection on strawberries made me think of it. I love that your post comes out on Wednesdays, and I teach my class on Wednesday night. It is really good food for thought. I think I'm going to share this poem tonight and have folks write about something fresh- I'm going to have them bring in a piece of fruit, or something that's fresh in their mind and see where it goes. Thanks Julie!

Impossible, how they're picked ripe from the garden every day this week, planted seven hundred and seventeen sunrises ago. Blooms so simple and delicate, and the bearded green bud, studded with seeds turning something into fruit I didn't earn, but bear anyway. How? I ask, when I hold a single, red berry with the whole of the sun inside. Did I? I ask, when I take the first bite, careful not to eat the leaves. Get so blessed? I ask, when I lick the juice off my fingers and smile, knowing a sweetness so real I could cry.

Thank you for the prompt! There’s a photo in my Notes I randomly shared of my first harvest, this week, so when I came across your post I knew I had to write something!

I love this prompt Julie. Thank you so much. The first memory that came to mind was last summer when my brother and his family visited from TN. We bought loads of strawberries and placed in a huge bowl. All the kiddos gathered around and we eat them together every morning & as a snack..until they were gone.

Thank you.
