From the link you provided, my eyes landed on a painting called “The Last of the Buffalo,” except when I first saw it my eyes read the title as “The Last Buffalo,” which immediately prompted a feeling of sadness and loss to potentially write about. Dropping those two seemingly insignificant words—of the—was surprisingly impactful.
My mother so loved all of Degas’ paintings of dancers, and I believe it had something to do with the fact that polio had interrupted her own dancing years. Thank you, Julie, for helping loosen something tight in my own heart as I remember—and write—about my mother.
