This week I’ve got a photo prompt for you. Credit goes to my sister who snapped it on a fall drive in the English Cotswolds where she lives.
Be ready for anything to happen when you use a photo as a writing prompt. You might start by describing what you see, then an image or a phrase might take you somewhere else in your memory or imagination.
You might write a story that actually happened…or one that could.
You might glance once at the photo, then set it aside as your writing takes off. Or you might go back to the image, again and again, noticing more details.
Perhaps the photo poses a question.
Perhaps it reminds you of somewhere or someone.
As with any prompt, you might write a few different trains of thought—starting and stopping—before you settle into one. Give yourself time.
I wonder what this photo (or another one you choose) will prompt in you?
a writing prompt
welcome to new readers
Welcome! I’m so glad you are here. You’ve joined a community of people who want to use their words to pay attention to what matters.
You can read more about how, as a young grieving mother, writing in company with others saved me, and why I do this work. I invite you to look back through the archives for other prompts, then pick up a pen and start writing! Last year around this time I shared an All Saints-inspired prompt about Balcony People, or the saints, in our lives.
Whether you use the prompts to journal, to spark creative ideas for your own work, or as a spiritual or generative practice in some other way, I’d love to hear about it. Introduce yourself by replying, or in the comments, and share your response to the prompts if you like.
If you know someone who might enjoy the prompt, please share this post with them!

As the date gets closer, look for an email for paid subscribers with the link and more information.
