Welcome to Writing in Company. Each week I share some words and a writing prompt, meant to be jumping-off points for you to write about what matters. Use the prompts however you like—to journal, to draft thoughts for your own writing project, as meditation or prayer ideas, or for another creative endeavor. If this one doesn’t resonate, take a look back through the archive for one that does. Grab your pen and paper, and let your words loose on the page.
I’m watching dandelion fluff blow past my upstairs window. The dreamy puff balls are a reminder of the neglected corner of the yard. It’s out of sight, except when returning from walking the dog down the street. Every day I look at the corner and think: I should trim those back. But I haven’t. Now, the floating fluff is germinating the rest of the yard, and all the neighbors’ yards too, I guess.
I am sorry, neighbors. A little bit.
I’m also marveling at the wind’s ability to spread those seeds-in-waiting. Nature is at work for wild beauty, despite our efforts to tame or erase her.
I’m also a little wistful about dandelions. The soaring floss used to be seen as a child’s wish taking off into the universe. When did it become an adult’s guilty nagging reminder? It went from wish to admonition, when I wasn’t paying attention.

I encounter dandelions so differently now that I know they are packed with nutrition - a health food, for free, absolutely everywhere! All parts are edible and medicinal, from roots to milky stem to leaves to flowers. It was an eye-opening shift for me to move from seeing them as nuisance to welcoming their abundance! Thank you for this prompt!
