I recently put out a brief call for collaborators and was overwhelmed by the number of people wanting to share a writing prompt or post! I am enjoying reading responders’ work and looking for connections and places of overlap. Here’s an intro for potential co-creators:
What to Know About Writing in Company
Writing in Company is an invitation for people to write about what matters. In my Substack posts and my workshops, I offer the grieving and the grateful a space to pay attention to their lives and use their words to move toward healing, hope, and wholeness. My work reflects what I’ve learned in my 20+ year journey with a writing group of fellow bereaved mothers. Some readers and writers find me through this connection with grief, and a desire to use writing as a way to remember, wrestle, and reframe after loss. Others connect with my work as a progressive pastor who helps people deepen their faith and engage the world, often through spiritual practice writing and writing workshops. A growing number find my prompts give them grist for their own writing in different genres, or for meditation or prayer—with or without a pen.
You can read a few background pieces about me and my approach here: How writing with others saved me and Grief and Grace in the NICU and The best writing advice I’ve ever gotten and why I love a good writing prompt.
About My Writing Prompts
Writing prompts that resonate with me and my readers leave room for open-ended reflection. A poem from Mary Oliver or Ada Limón. A quote from Rumi or Ross Gay. A writing constraint or form that generates new ideas. A photograph you pull from a pile or from your memory. An object from the junk drawer that reminds you of your grandmother or that trip from years ago. An image or a question or a song that you can’t get out of your head. The prompt might start in the world of specifics, but it provides a wide opening for memory and imagination to unfurl on the page for anyone who encounters it.
Where to Go to Collaborate
I plan to share occasional prompts from others who also use writing in similar ways, personally or professionally. I’m open to writers from all backgrounds, identities, and spiritual persuasions—as long as you are open and welcoming to all, too.
If you have an idea for a prompt to share, or another collaboration idea, please fill out this brief form: Collaborating with Writing in Company. If I find an opportunity for us to work together, I will be back in touch with you.
Gratefully, Julie
Somehow I missed this post! I have an idea I will submit through the form.
